HIS 101
HISTORY OF ART
Overview
About This Course
This course surveys the history of art from antiquity through the modern era, examining painting, sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts across cultures. Students study major periods and movements alongside the social, religious, political, and economic conditions that produced them. Coursework centers on close visual analysis, reading primary and secondary sources, and building written arguments about works of art. Understanding how images have carried meaning across centuries gives designers a deeper vocabulary for the work they make now.
Prerequisites: This is a general education course.
